Just got this display a few days ago, manufactured June ’10. Amazon were quick getting it here taking taking 5 days (including over the weekend) for super saver delivery. This is a very good monitor for the price when looking at the current alternative options. e-IPS technology helps with the viewing angles and although they are not as good as I’d expected, they are better than on a TN screen and they do improve with lowered brightness. Colours are rich and bright when adjusted properly.

Dynamic contrast DOES WORK (unlike what is said in a lot of reviews online) but it a slow ramp up/down and may take 10-20 seconds to adjust fully in games and such like, doesn’t appear to run when just using windows so it may have a minimum threshold for contrast before adjustment takes place, or there is some other sort of detection algorithm going on. In games, although it looks great for brightly lit scenes/elements, in very dark scenes brightness drops so it can look extremely dark indeed! I currently always have it on for gaming (Graphics/Game mode/Dynamic contrast ON).

16:9 1920×1080 resolution is great for gaming and general windows use but I would probably have preferred the larger 16:10 1920×1200 monitors. However those monitors are £££ more and I am happy at this price. Build quality is very good, I can see it lasting a while.

Ergonomically, the stand is excellent providing height, swivel, pitch and rotational adjustments (to Portrait 1080×1920) which works very well. It has a 4 port USB hub and connectors for the optional sound bar. The screen is matt not glossy, ideal for me as there are no annoying reflections. The surround is matt black, so no lingering scratches or finger prints. Perfect!

There are a few presets for colour temperature (Standard, Multimedia, Game, Warm, Cool, and Custom RGB) and different options available for Video or Graphics use. I am not sure what the difference is between Video/Game mode and Graphics/Game mode for example, except you can increase the colour (saturation) in Video/Game mode. There is no way of saving profiles that I know of but it does remember some settings. It uses an 8 bit display apparently, 16.7M vs the more common 6 bit TN’s 272K colours.

Monitor response in games (“input lag”) is noticeably higher than on my CRT (I like fast FPS games) but this may be somewhat influenced by the high resolution that my graphics card has to use (an ATI HIS 4670HD), and I am yet to experiment to see if different monitor modes will improve this. No streaking or ghosting so the “response time” has impressed.

Overall I am very happy with my purchase and give it 4 1/2 stars in my post-purchase bliss, rounded down to 4.

The title of the review says it all, for the price the laptop is good, and one grade higher (especially in terms of RAM) than you can get on the high street for the same price.
